Shout out to Jessie Santiano, M.D. for spotting this study and for recognizing its potential importance.
This study’s conclusions seem almost unbelievable to me, but I am remembering how the very early, winter of 2020, study by two Indian scientists that identified the presence of HIV gene sequences in SARS-Cov-2 were suppressed, ridiculed, resurrected, and finally shown to be true. I am usually a plodder. But this could be important. So, I am posting this. Commenters, please comment! We shall stay tuned.
We shall await commentary from more educated minds than mine here, but Dr. Jesse Santiano, M.D. reports:
“Two authors from Japan specializing in viral genetics and evolution made the astounding claims.
Atsushi Tanaka from the Division of Research Animal Laboratory and Translational Medicine of the Osaka Medical and Pharmaceutical University.
The other is Takayuki Miyazawa, an associate professor at the Resilience Research Unit at Kyoto University in Japan.
Tanaka and Miyazawa work at the Laboratory of Virus-Host Coevolution, Institute for Frontier Life and Medical Sciences in Kyoto.”
They looked at the patterns of evolution, and the types of evolution in hundreds of Omicron variants. They concluded that unless some new, previously unknown type of viral evolution has occurred, then the patterns they are seeing have to be artificial.
They determined that the variants did not appear to have been created by a continuous process of accumulating mutations. They also determined that the mutations could likely not have occurred if the same person got infected by two different variants of the virus. Also, the types of mutations they found were not distributed in a natural manner throughout the viral genome. Finally, some of the "new" variants had actually appeared in identical form, in other geographical locations far from the stated places of emergence-- a couple of years before these "new" variants were reported.
That is, these patterns of evolution have not been seen before in nature.
This is astounding if true. It would imply to me (!) that some lab(s) created these variants artificially, and either leaked them or deliberately released them into the world. The authors of this study suggest that the mutations could have been made in order to better determine the exact sequences that determine the pathogenicity of the spike protein.
(But were these hundreds of variants all leaks??)
The researchers go on to suggest that if these unnatural patterns exist in Omicron variants, it would be good to examine the evolution patterns of the earlier variants.
"We do not conclude that these viruses were artificially synthesized and distributed based on malicious intent. This paper aims to point out that SARS-Cov-2 has undergone unthinkable mutations under conventional coronavirus mutation mechanisms, and we hope that the possibility of artificial theory should be included in the discussion seriously as to the formation of SARS-Cov-2 variants."
"The analysis we have shown here is that the Omicron variants are formed by an entirely new mechanism that cannot be explained by previous biology, and knowing the way how the SARS-CoV-2 variants were formed prompts a reconsideration of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic."
The study was published August 15, 2023.
I don't know. But I think it is good to give us, here, this heads-up so that we can follow the news for further developments about this, if there are such.
Here is Dr. Jesse Santiano's post . THANK YOU, DR. SANTIANO!

The following article maybe does a better job than I have done of explaining the rationale behind this study’s conclusions. At least it fills in some of my misses.
And for those who want to go into more depth, here is a great SUBSTACK:
