Yes. The spirit of Buddhism has always been "Be the light", and "Buddha is in your heart", and "anyone can become Buddha, it is only a matter of >practice< (I don't know a better word)". Hence there is a fundamental difference when compared to the Christian religions. Buddhism starts from looking inward and improving oneself from inside. Going into a temple to pray is among the lowest levels of practice, but some people need to start from there.

Some of the Chinese and Japanese monks like to pass on this motto to their students and follower: 一燈傳照 My translation is: be a light to shine around you, to shine the light at multiple places, and to pass the light on when you finish your journey. One large stone statue in the Enryaku-ji Temple on the Hiei Mountain north of Kyoto, Japan has these four Kanji. The stories have it as written by the second master of the temple originally.
